The bag of contact poison was in the ceiling above the Crane quarters. Setsuna's own cousin sleeps in that room.
The tea went on with everyone smiling and nobody mentioning the night. Daidoji Shin was there, and Asahina Nao, and Ide Subane with Utaku Sumiteru beside her, while Kaeru Ronin went through the guest wing room by room.
Bayushi Monban and Kakita Kazumi used the gathering as cover to search the Crane guest rooms. Kakita Kazumi talked his way past the Kaeru Ronin on Emerald Magistrate authority, got inside, and found a ceiling panel out of true with a rope behind it running up into the roof space.
And in the roof, a Thick Black Hemp Bag, oily to the touch. He knew what it was: Firebiter Poison — a forbidden contact poison, and exactly consistent with what has been happening to Shiba Midori.
He handled it properly. Gloves, his wakizashi cleaned, the bag sealed inside a Leather Carry Bag, and Governor Miya Tetsuya told before he did anything else. Then back to the courtyard, where Bayushi Monban arrived out of the air trailing snow off Riding the Clouds, and the exits were closed.
Kakita Kazumi addressed the guests. The intrusions, the poisoning of a magistrate, the approach from the water — snapped reins cut into breathing tubes under the shoreline rocks — and the bag in the ceiling above the Crane couple's quarters, which belong to Doji Masato and Doji Miho.
Doji Setsuna moved to shield her cousin. Doji Masato denied everything and put forward the obvious counter: a dishonourable shinobi planted it there to ruin a Crane name. Which is not a bad argument, and is exactly what a guilty man would also say.
Bayushi Monban read them while they talked and judged they were deflecting. To crack them he used Cackling Laughter and put strife through the room, Doji Masato included — and Governor Miya Tetsuya told him plainly that laughing was unbecoming. A request to look in on Miya Misato was refused.
Doji Miho argued the case had no link to them at all and demanded the accusations stop. Then Shiba Midori's attendant came round, and said she had seen someone going through Shiba Midori's things.
And Ikoma Tadayoshi worked the room while all this was happening, dropping it among the Unicorn and anyone else who would listen that the Crane were covering something up.
Setsuna
The poison was above her cousin's bed. Firebiter Poison in the roof of the Crane quarters occupied by Doji Masato and Doji Miho, reached by a rope through a shifted ceiling panel — and it matches what has been done to Shiba Midori.
She moved to shield them, and she should be honest with herself about why. Doji Masato's explanation is genuinely good: a shinobi with a rope and a roof can put a bag above anyone's bed, and framing a Crane during an Imperial arbitration is worth doing. It is also precisely what she would expect to hear from someone who did it. The evidence does not distinguish between those two, and her instinct to protect a cousin is not evidence.
What she can do is notice which way the room reads it. Ikoma Tadayoshi spent the entire gathering telling the Unicorn that the Crane are hiding something. Whether or not the Doji are guilty, somebody wanted the Crane accused in front of a Unicorn envoy on the day an Imperial peace mission was being escorted — and that outcome follows from planting the bag or from finding it.
The water is the answer to how. Reins cut into breathing tubes under the shoreline rocks. They came in submerged, in fog, on a night when no watcher could see. Combined with the carefully replaced tiles in the Main Tower, this crew has been surveying the island for longer than one night.
Two things to press. Shiba Midori's attendant is awake and saw someone going through her belongings — the only eyewitness anyone has, and she should be interviewed properly and immediately by somebody other than the two men who have been searching rooms. And the request to see Miya Misato was refused. On a sealed island where the envoy is the actual target, being told no is the single most interesting thing that has happened today.
And a note on method. Bayushi Monban used Cackling Laughter on a room of guests to break a suspect, in front of the governor, who told him it was unbecoming. He is right that the Doji were deflecting. He is also making her look like a magistrate whose yojimbo torments witnesses — a week after another magistrate rebuked him for withholding evidence.
