Spirit's Binding and Reckoning

Session 33·2025-12-23

"Do I have to go back into a person?" the Ifrit asked. Then it said that if there was no other choice, it would go — and folded itself into the jar with something that looked very much like grief.

Governor Miya Tetsuya wanted his friend saved. Tonbo Higuchi is a noble author of standing, and something is inside her. He put Asahina Nao at the magistrates' disposal; Shiba Midori had the ritual instructions. They were still planning when the palace produced a crash from the Palace Kitchen.

She was in there in a purple dress, dishevelled, feeding logs into the furnace one after another and not feeling the heat at all. Kakita Kazumi went to her and got nothing but confusion back. Then he saw the pendant at her throat, took it off her, and put it in water. Bayushi Monban recognised the engraving — script out of the Burning Sands. That was the binding.

They needed a place and a container. Asahina Nao produced a fresh vessel; Governor Miya Tetsuya gave them the Central Garden and had the servants shut the entrances. The woman wandered to the fish pond, reached in, and ate a goldfish raw.

Bayushi Monban laid a Threshold Barrier around the pond — and felt his own demon wound light up while he cast it. He tried to pull her through the barrier to separate her from the thing riding her. It did not work. She went out through the ward and the spirit stayed where it was.

Tonbo Kuma arrived with his bodyguard to help. Shiba Midori reached for the Heart of Amaterasu to blunt the spirit's grip and the working would not do what she needed. So they changed the order of operations: drive it out first, seal it second. Bayushi Monban called on the Lady of Decay — his clan tattoos moving on his skin as he did it — went up on Riding the Clouds, carried the vessel and the instructions to Shiba Midori, and the two of them ran a Cleansing Rite of ash and fire together.

The Ifrit came out of her enormous, inside the barrier, furious.

Kakita Kazumi went at it with a bucket of water in one hand and put an iaijutsu cut into it that landed properly. It hit him back hard enough to put him on the ground unconscious and bleeding. Asahina Nao kept working the sealing rite. Bayushi Monban went in and dragged Kakita Kazumi out.

And then, with the thing raging in a cage of their making, Doji Setsuna offered it a parley.

It talked. Furious and grieving at once, and willing to leave its host on terms. Do I have to go back into a person? it asked Shiba Midori. And then: if there is no other choice, it would go. Shiba Midori put protection up, Doji Setsuna held out the new vessel, and the Ifrit — worn out — went into it and collapsed, and Asahina Nao closed the seal.

Tonbo Higuchi was left stable and badly shaken. Bayushi Monban, still carrying the mark of the Lady of Decay, turned on Doji Setsuna in front of everyone for walking up to a burning spirit to talk to it, and the two of them had it out where the whole garden could hear.

Setsuna

The parley worked, and it is the only thing in this whole affair that has. Every technical approach failed in sequence — the Threshold Barrier did not separate them, the Heart of Amaterasu would not take, the extraction had to be reordered mid-fight, and Kakita Kazumi put a sword into the thing and was carried off unconscious for his trouble. Then she talked to it, and it left.

Because it is a person, and everybody has been treating it as cargo. Do I have to go back into a person? It asked that. It agreed to be sealed because there was no other choice offered, and it went into the jar grieving. Shiba Midori has been calling this trade blasphemy for three sessions on principle; tonight the principle answered a direct question in front of witnesses.

Which makes the vessel in Asahina Nao's hands a prisoner rather than a trophy, and the party is holding one. They have done exactly what the smugglers do — moved a bound spirit from a spent vessel into a fresh one — with better manners and the governor's blessing. The difference is consent and a promise, and no promise has yet been kept, because none was made.

She should find out what it wants. It is the only witness in this city who has been inside the traffic from the cargo's side. It knows who bound it, who carried it, and who put it into Tonbo Higuchi.

The pendant is the physical evidence. Foreign script from the Burning Sands, recovered off the host's neck — and a receipt in Hana no Ame's pen name for exactly such a talisman is already in her custody. That is a chain from a named buyer to a possessed author in the governor's own house.

Which closes the circle nobody had drawn yet. Hana no Ame is a pen name, and it belongs to Tonbo Higuchi. The novelist the Lion daimyō wants silenced, the buyer on the receipt in Setsuna's own custody, and the possessed woman in the governor's kitchen are one person — and the receipt she signed was for the pendant that was hanging round her neck tonight.

So the question is no longer who she is. It is whether she bought that thing knowing what was in it, or was sold it deliberately by someone who did. A novelist researching how people interact with spirits is precisely the customer to steer a bound Ifrit toward, if what is wanted is a noble author walking around a governor's palace with a fire spirit inside her — and both a Unicorn and a Lion samurai were already hunting her before it happened.

One last thing, and it is not a small one. Bayushi Monban shouted at her in a garden full of people. He was frightened, he was marked by the Lady of Decay, and he was not wrong about the risk. He was wrong about the place.

Timeline

Governor's Discreet Request - The governor, Miya Tetsuya, asked the group to discreetly save his friend Higuchi from a possessing spirit and the party discussed containment options. The disturbance in the palace led them to the kitchen where they found a disheveled woman exhibiting unnatural behavior. The group identified a foreign pendant removed from the woman, confirmed it had held a powerful spirit, secured a replacement vessel, and prepared the Central Garden pond as the controlled space for warding and extraction.

Private rescue request issued - Miya Tetsuya asked the group to discreetly save his friend Higuchi, a noble author, from a possessing spirit; Asahina provided a suitable vessel and Shiba Midori carried the ritual instructions. The group discussed using a Threshold Barrier and potentially waiting for Tonbo Kuma before acting.

Confrontation and denial - Kakita Kazumi approached the woman and asked whether she was a lady or a spirit; the woman denied possession, complained about the heat, and stepped outside appearing confused. Observers noted her boorish manners, ravenous eating, sweating while claiming cold, and jerky movements as unnatural for a noble in the Governor’s Palace.

Pendant identified as foreign - Kakita Kazumi noticed and covertly removed a Gold Pendant With Red Gems Forming A Roaring Flame Emblem, then placed it in water where it briefly sizzled and burned his fingers. Asahina noted the pendant’s non-Rokugani make, Shiba Midori began spiritual scrutiny, and Bayushi Monban identified the script as from the Burning Sands; Shiba Midori’s analysis showed the pendant had bound a very powerful spirit but was recently emptied.

  • Non-Rokugani make confirmed - Asahina Nao remarked on the pendant’s foreign make; Shiba Midori began spiritual scrutiny while it remained in the water.

  • Forced crossing attempted - Bayushi Monban pulled the woman through the barrier; she slapped him, fled for her clothes, and the spirit remained within her.

Ritual Preparation and Extraction - Reinforcements arrived and the group clarified roles for ejection and sealing of the spirit. Shiba Midori and Bayushi Monban attempted multiple spiritual effects, discovered the trapping rite’s limitation against possessing spirits, and prioritized forcing the spirit from the host before sealing. Bayushi Monban used mobility and invoked powers while Shiba Midori coordinated the Cleansing Rite that forced the spirit to leave the host.

Reinforcements and roles assigned - Doji Setsuna returned with Tonbo Kuma and a bodyguard and briefed them on the situation. Doji Setsuna urged Tonbo Kuma to assist Bayushi Monban and Shiba Midori, and Asahina reiterated the need to expel the spirit before sealing.

Initial magical attempts fail - Shiba Midori attempted to invoke Heart of Amaterasu to hinder the spirit but failed, subtly increasing the spirit’s next difficulty. Bayushi Monban’s second attempt to force separation by tackling the woman through the barrier failed to split the possessing spirit from the host, and Shiba Midori determined the trapping rite only works on unbound spirits.

  • Second barrier push failed - Bayushi Monban tackled the woman through the barrier to force separation; the barrier did not split the possessing spirit from the host.
  • Ritual limitation realized - Shiba Midori determined from the ritual text that the trapping rite only works on unbound spirits and could not affect a possessing spirit.

Extraction method chosen and empowered - The team aligned on first ejecting the spirit then sealing it; Asahina urged extraction, and Bayushi Monban invoked Riding the Clouds to reach Shiba Midori and deliver the vessel and instructions. Bayushi Monban declared himself a Kuni warden, drew Family (his blood-bound blade), and called on the Lady of Decay, producing animated clan-tattoos, changes in his hair and eyes, and manifesting a shadowy form, Onohime.

Containment Combat and Aftermath - The Ifrit manifested within the Threshold Barrier and engaged the party, dealing critical damage to Kakita Kazumi before the group contained it. The Ifrit tested the ward, Doji Setsuna offered parley, and the spirit agreed to enter the provided vessel under compulsion; Shiba Midori completed containment rituals and felt the sealed box’s power. The party tended to the wounded, checked the freed host, exchanged heated words in public, and the shadow form receded.

Ifrit counters and injures Kazumi - Kakita Kazumi grabbed a bucket of water and closed on the Ifrit, landed an iaijutsu cut that knocked smoking coals from the Ifrit and inflicted a critical wound, and the Ifrit countered with a single powerful blow that knocked Kazumi unconscious and left him burning and bleeding. Asahina shouted warnings about the spirit’s lethality while the sealing ritual continued.

  • Water bucket readied - Kakita Kazumi grabbed a nearby bucket of water and rushed to close the distance to the Ifrit.

Parley and spirit surrender - Doji Setsuna knelt at the barrier and offered to bear the spirit to a place it could be freed; Shiba Midori translated. The Ifrit asked whether it must shrink to fill a mortal again and said it would go with them if there were no other option; Shiba Midori invoked Fires of Purity on herself, rejected release, demanded containment for Rokugan’s safety, Doji Setsuna presented the new vessel, and the Ifrit collapsed into it with palpable sadness as Asahina completed the sealing ritual.
