Burning Sands

The Burning Sands is a vast, arid region located east of Rokugan, characterized by extreme climate and unique geography, dominated by rolling dunes, rocky outcrops, and occasional oases that provide respite from harsh conditions. This distant land is known for its distinct script, identified as the writing of the Burning Sands, indicating a rich history and connection to powerful spirits. The sands are said to possess magical properties associated with the spirits inhabiting the area, reflecting a divergence in cultures and magical practices from Rokugan. Historically, the Burning Sands have served as a place of trade and conflict, where various clans seek to acquire powerful artifacts and magical items. The region is marked by tales of wandering spirits and remnants of ancient civilizations. A recent event highlighted the unique challenges posed by these spirits when a noble author named Higuchi became possessed by a powerful Ifrit, a being of ash and fire. A group of shugenja and samurai intervened, finding her in the Palace Kitchen, displaying unnatural behavior despite the summer heat. They prepared to contain the spirit using a Threshold Barrier in the Central Garden, where she was drawn to a fish pond. The situation escalated into a series of rituals and confrontations to expel the spirit, culminating in the Ifrit being contained in a new vessel after a dramatic struggle. This incident underscores the ongoing significance of the Burning Sands as a site of both danger and intrigue, where the interplay of spirits and mortals continues to shape its legacy. Plans have been made to journey to the Burning Sands to release a Fire Spirit causing disturbances. The spirit agreed to remain contained temporarily if it could be taken away from water and released beyond the last large river north of the mountains, near a shrine to a Fortune and past the Border Waystation. This journey is estimated to take a week on fast horses, reflecting the distance and difficulty of reaching the Burning Sands from the City of the Rich Frog.
