Emerald Diplomacy and Ancestral Echoes

The case turns on a battle nobody wrote down properly. The one witness who can still be questioned has been dead three hundred years, and she is moving the furniture in the Hall of Scribes.

At Kitsu Keep the shrine attendant Kitsu Taigen had been watching the ancestral realm misbehave and had worked out why. His adopted daughter Kitsuko Ayoko — not of samurai lineage, and near her coming of age — is manifesting as a shugenja for the first time. Shiba Midori confirmed it in the plainest possible terms, told him to rejoice and to get the girl formally tested at the temples, and told the girl to keep a dream journal. The dreams are recurring and they are not hers: she is looking through somebody else's eyes at a battle, a mountain pass, a grassy field, and a hill in the middle of it.

Kitsu Taigen knows what he owes and to whom. I and my line owe her a karmic debt, for I am descended from Matsu Sakura, one of the generals of Snow Field — who would in all likelihood have died there without Kitsu Yui.

Then Kitsu Takeko gave them the case. The Scorpion Clan and the Unicorn Clan both claim ownership of a set of ancient diamond mines. The envoys are named: Ide Subane for the Unicorn, Shosuro Aishi for the Scorpion. What will decide it is documentation and the history behind it. She had their swords returned to them polished, opened the archives without conditions — ask and it will be granted to you — and snapped up a body of servants to fetch. Shiba Midori, watching rather than listening, saw fire spirits moving around the red-haired daimyō like weather.

The archives did not cooperate. In the Ikoma Hall of Scribes the historian Ikoma Ichigo took them through the Battle of the Snow Plain and the records ran out: some lost, some never formally deposited at all. His account gave the Unicorn the victory and the Lion the defeat and did not mention the Scorpion Clan anywhere in it, which is precisely the point the Scorpion claim rests on, and which made the young Lion samurai in the room extremely angry to hear said aloud. Doji Setsuna set herself to go further back and to find the testimony of Unicorn tactical lieutenants, on the reasoning that the losing side's staff officers write down what the winning side's historians leave out. They also pulled the betrothal that started the trouble with the Unicorn: Shinjo Altansarnai and Ikoma Anakazu, with the Imperial seal on it.

Around Kitsuko Ayoko the room kept moving. Papers stirred with no wind on them. A battlefield map came off a shelf, crossed the floor, and stopped at her feet. Scrolls went through the air. Shiba Midori calmed her and gave her the reading: an ancestor moves and behaves much as the living do, and this one is pointing at things she wants seen. One of the scrolls that came down carried the name Kitsumitsuru — a great-grandmother of somebody standing there — and described the rare Kitsu working by which ancestor spirits are called into a battle, a thing that requires the honour to be there before the summons will hold. It tied Shiba Midori's own line to Kitsu Yui.

Elsewhere Bayushi Monban had two conversations. On the Path of Splinters a Scorpion courtier, Soshi Aisha, introduced herself as acting for Bayushi Kachiko and talked about Toshi Ranbo and about how a negotiation like this one gets steered. And during Ikoma Ichigo's recital he saw a red-masked Scorpion leave the gathering early and went after them through the crowd. His own contribution to the diplomacy was a proposal that the Lion Clan and the Unicorn Clan exchange betrothals in both directions. It was received with scepticism, and it was not dismissed.

They went back to the Kitsu Archives to keep digging, with a preliminary report owed to Kitsu Takeko and the envoys already on the road.

Setsuna

The case is legible now, and it is worse than a property dispute. The Scorpion and the Unicorn both claim the diamond mines; the claim turns on what happened at the Battle of the Snow Plain; and the Lion record of that battle is missing where it is not silent. The Lion Clan's own historian tells it with no Scorpion in it. Either the Scorpion were not there and their claim is air, or they were there and the Lion did not write them down — and the Lion are the ones holding the archive, hosting the negotiation, and fighting a war on the other side of the wall.

Her line of attack is the losing side's staff work. Unicorn tactical lieutenants had to account for the field to their own officers, and they had no reason to keep the Scorpion out of it. That is where a Scorpion presence at Snow Plain will be, if it is anywhere.

Kitsu Takeko has now given her cavalry, an open archive, and a promise to ask after her husband, and has asked nothing in return. That balance will not stay where it is.

Two things she cannot reach with paper. A spirit in the Ikoma Hall of Scribes is trying to show a child from the Snow Plain what happened at the Snow Plain. And Kitsuko Ayoko is dreaming it from the inside, through eyes that are not hers.
