The Lion Clan attack was supposed to go in at first light and did not, because the army was not yet marshalled. Kitsu Somalia, Akuyaku and Toronoko bought the delay. What the scouts brought back with the dawn was worth the price of it: the Unicorn camp was not asleep. It was dug in — works thrown up, watchtowers standing, archers already placed. And the horses were gone.
The ground was worse than the camp. The field the Lion Clan meant to cross was bog with fresh snow lying on top of thick mud, which looks like a field and holds a man's foot like a hand.
Matsu Sakura called her officers together. Matsu Morozane gave them the reading on the missing horses: the Unicorn had not abandoned the camp, because abandoning many horses appears cowardly. The officers laughed. To a Lion, a Unicorn giving up his horse is a joke and not a possibility. It is the correct reading. It is also exactly the reading a man is meant to reach when the horses have been moved on purpose.
Kitsu Somalia did not laugh. The spirits had something to say and what they said was that the Unicorn were waiting, that they intended to use the ground itself, and that they would choose the moment. She proposed settling the whole thing by a contest of champions, which is honourable, cheap, and available. Matsu Sakura refused it as premature: an army had been assembled to fight an enemy, not to watch two people fight.
Akuyaku argued for more delay and a different door — east, through the village and up into the mountains, close enough to find whatever paths ran into that camp that nobody had drawn on a map. Pushing the line forward blind, he said, would open the Lion Clan to whatever the Unicorn had spent the night preparing. Kitsu Somalia backed patience again.
Matsu Sakura held for action, and got it. The battle line would go across the field to test what the Unicorn were made of, and Akuyaku would go in behind them at sunset with the army's muster as his signal. Toronoko, Kitsu Somalia and Matsu Morozane took commands and took them forward, across the mud, under the snow, toward a camp that had chosen its ground and was waiting on it.

This is not a session she attended. It is a memory she is inside, three centuries deep, looking out through Matsu Morozane's eyes, and it is the same battle the diamond mines case turns on.
What it establishes that the Hall of Scribes does not: the Unicorn Clan chose that ground, prepared it overnight, and moved their horses out to be seen to have moved them. The Lion Clan crossed a bog to reach a fortified camp because their commander overruled two officers who told her not to. Ikoma Ichigo's account gives the Unicorn the victory. It does not give them the preparation, and a victory that was prepared is a different fact in a deed dispute than a victory that was won.
What the council does not say matters as much. They argue that ground for a full session — the bog, the snow, the eastern approach through the village and up into the mountains — and nobody once mentions that the Old Diamond Mines are on the hill above them. Neither army knew. That absence is worth more to her than anything they did say.
