They stopped discussing whether to forge the evidence and started sourcing the handwriting and the chop. Setsuna was in the room for it.
In the Kitsu Archives the four of them sat down over Ikoma Akuyaku's journal to decide what they were going to tell Kitsuki Kaage. Bayushi Monban put the argument at its strongest: Scorpion agents made the Unicorn victory at the Snow Plain possible, and if there was a bargain behind that, then the Unicorn owe the Scorpion the mines under the hill. Doji Setsuna, Kakita Kazumi and Shiba Midori all came back to the same place: not without documents.
Doji Setsuna then set her price. She would support the Scorpion claim on one condition — the Scorpion keep their hands off the coming Crane–Lion treaty. She already had the ground prepared; a Shosuro contact was standing by to trade exactly that non-intervention for exactly that support. Kakita Kazumi came back later in the day with the Scorpion's own price, and it was the same clause from the other side of the table.
With the delegations on the road, they decided to build the case here rather than risk the journey to the Snow Plain: Lion historians for expert testimony, the archive for documents, and a forger for the rest. Bayushi Monban stayed in the castle rather than go looking for evidence in the field, on the grounds that his job is Doji Setsuna and not the case.
Doji Setsuna booked physicians and Ikoma Ichigo. In the scribes' halls she turned up something nobody had gone looking for: a recently filed treaty between the Lion and the Crane, favouring Lion territorial ambitions, mediated by Otomo Genshin, with the Imperial hand visible on it.
Kakita Kazumi spent the day with Scorpion courtiers. At the Path of Splinters gazebo he met Soshi Yamako — I had heard that the Topaz Champion was here — and by evening the two of them were in a corner of the Ikoma Library over plum wine, working out how to manufacture a confession that would put Scorpion interference at the Snow Plain on paper. He walked her through Akodo Toronoko's account and demonstrated how many hands he can write in.
Bayushi Monban went to the Ancestral Shrine to ask his own dead what to make of the Scorpion, and was told what offerings would draw the attention of ancestors who are not Lion. He resolved to lay on a feast for Shosuro Amaro, a Scorpion advising the Unicorn. Then he took Soshi Yamako's other proposal — a forged Unicorn–Scorpion agreement — weighed the danger of it, and accepted her terms. His side of the bargain is to find Shinjo Kamo's handwriting and his chop somewhere in this castle's records.
Shiba Midori performed a Phoenix tale in the Ikoma Hall of Scribes and picked up a courtier of her own clan, Shiba Masaharu, out of the audience.
And over tea, Doji Setsuna and Shiba Midori talked about Otomo Genshin's hand in the Lion–Crane truce, and then Doji Setsuna asked her what she knew about maternity teas — the kind that help a pregnancy hold, and the kind that end one. Shiba Midori said she knew both.
Setsuna
She is inside a forgery now. Not adjacent to one — inside it. The plan was made in front of her in the Kitsu Archives, Kakita Kazumi is drafting a false confession with a Scorpion forger, Bayushi Monban has accepted terms to fabricate a Unicorn–Scorpion agreement, and his half of the work is finding Shinjo Kamo's hand and chop in the archive she was given the keys to. She cannot claim she did not know. If this is discovered, the fact that she personally forged nothing will not save her, her rulings, or Shinjo Harunobu's transfer.
And it is not even necessary. The party already has the true version — quartermasters' ledgers proving the sabotage, Ikoma Akuyaku's concealed Scorpion reports inside the Lion archive, a medic praised in the rosters and struck from the genealogies. The reason they are forging is that the true evidence proves the Scorpion presence was treason against the Lion, and nobody wants to say that in this castle. The forgery is not there to invent a fact. It is there to make a true fact sayable, which is a distinction that will not survive being found out.
The clause is good work. Scorpion non-intervention in the Crane–Lion treaty, traded for support on the mines. She set it before she heard the Scorpion's price and their price was the same clause, which means she read them correctly and gave away nothing by naming it first.
And the treaty she found is the more important document. A newly filed Lion–Crane agreement favouring Lion territorial ambition, mediated by an Otomo, with the Imperial hand on it — filed now, while the Lion are at war with the Unicorn and an Imperial envoy is trying to broker that war closed. Her own clan is being moved somewhere and she found out by accident, in a scribes' hall, on her way to something else. That is worth more of her attention than the mines.
She asked Shiba Midori about maternity teas, both kinds. That is hers, and it is now known to one other person.
Timeline
Judgment Planning in Kitsu Archives - Doji Setsuna, Bayushi Monban, Kakita Kazumi, and Shiba Midori convene in the Kitsu Archives to prepare a judgment on the Snow Plain dispute between the Unicorn Clan and Scorpion Clan Clans. They review Ikoma Akuyaku’s journal and debate whether Scorpion Clan interference justifies awarding the Diamond Mines. The group outlines evidentiary requirements, conditional support tied to non-intervention promises, and local preparation options while accommodating Monban’s duty in the castle.
Council Convening and Claims - The council met in the Kitsu Archives to review Ikoma Akuyaku’s journal (which contained secret Scorpion Clan writings except one entry). Bayushi Monban asserted the Scorpion Clan enabled the Unicorn Clan victory at Snow Plain and claimed the Unicorn Clan owed the Diamond Mines to the Scorpion Clan. Doji Setsuna, Kakita Kazumi, and Shiba Midori acknowledged battlefield spy activity but insisted that only documented proof of a Unicorn Clan–Scorpion Clan agreement would justify awarding the mines.
- Kitsu Archives Debate - Doji Setsuna, Bayushi Monban, Kakita Kazumi, and Shiba Midori convened in the Kitsu Archives to plan a judgment for the Snow Plain dispute between the Unicorn Clan and the Scorpion Clan, reviewing Ikoma Akuyaku’s journal filled with secret Scorpion Clan writings except for one entry.

Crane Clan Conditional Support and Contact - Doji Setsuna argued that imperial law must serve the empire’s best interests and conditioned any support for the Scorpion Clan claim on an explicit Scorpion Clan promise of non-intervention in an upcoming Crane Clan–Lion Clan treaty. She confirmed a prior tea-ceremony approach to a Shosuro Contact who was open to negotiations for non-intervention in exchange for support on the mine claim. The group accepted they were two days from the Unicorn Clan and Scorpion Clan arrival and would prepare evidence locally rather than attempt a dangerous excursion to the Snow Plain.
