Political Intrigues of the Clans

Session 20·2025-09-09

They stopped discussing whether to forge the evidence and started sourcing the handwriting and the chop. Setsuna was in the room for it.

In the Kitsu Archives the four of them sat down over Ikoma Akuyaku's journal to decide what they were going to tell Kitsuki Kaage. Bayushi Monban put the argument at its strongest: Scorpion agents made the Unicorn victory at the Snow Plain possible, and if there was a bargain behind that, then the Unicorn owe the Scorpion the mines under the hill. Doji Setsuna, Kakita Kazumi and Shiba Midori all came back to the same place: not without documents.

Doji Setsuna then set her price. She would support the Scorpion claim on one condition — the Scorpion keep their hands off the coming CraneLion treaty. She already had the ground prepared; a Shosuro contact was standing by to trade exactly that non-intervention for exactly that support. Kakita Kazumi came back later in the day with the Scorpion's own price, and it was the same clause from the other side of the table.

With the delegations on the road, they decided to build the case here rather than risk the journey to the Snow Plain: Lion historians for expert testimony, the archive for documents, and a forger for the rest. Bayushi Monban stayed in the castle rather than go looking for evidence in the field, on the grounds that his job is Doji Setsuna and not the case.

Doji Setsuna booked physicians and Ikoma Ichigo. In the scribes' halls she turned up something nobody had gone looking for: a recently filed treaty between the Lion and the Crane, favouring Lion territorial ambitions, mediated by Otomo Genshin, with the Imperial hand visible on it.

Kakita Kazumi spent the day with Scorpion courtiers. At the Path of Splinters gazebo he met Soshi YamakoI had heard that the Topaz Champion was here — and by evening the two of them were in a corner of the Ikoma Library over plum wine, working out how to manufacture a confession that would put Scorpion interference at the Snow Plain on paper. He walked her through Akodo Toronoko's account and demonstrated how many hands he can write in.

Bayushi Monban went to the Ancestral Shrine to ask his own dead what to make of the Scorpion, and was told what offerings would draw the attention of ancestors who are not Lion. He resolved to lay on a feast for Shosuro Amaro, a Scorpion advising the Unicorn. Then he took Soshi Yamako's other proposal — a forged Unicorn–Scorpion agreement — weighed the danger of it, and accepted her terms. His side of the bargain is to find Shinjo Kamo's handwriting and his chop somewhere in this castle's records.

Shiba Midori performed a Phoenix tale in the Ikoma Hall of Scribes and picked up a courtier of her own clan, Shiba Masaharu, out of the audience.

And over tea, Doji Setsuna and Shiba Midori talked about Otomo Genshin's hand in the Lion–Crane truce, and then Doji Setsuna asked her what she knew about maternity teas — the kind that help a pregnancy hold, and the kind that end one. Shiba Midori said she knew both.

Setsuna

She is inside a forgery now. Not adjacent to one — inside it. The plan was made in front of her in the Kitsu Archives, Kakita Kazumi is drafting a false confession with a Scorpion forger, Bayushi Monban has accepted terms to fabricate a Unicorn–Scorpion agreement, and his half of the work is finding Shinjo Kamo's hand and chop in the archive she was given the keys to. She cannot claim she did not know. If this is discovered, the fact that she personally forged nothing will not save her, her rulings, or Shinjo Harunobu's transfer.

And it is not even necessary. The party already has the true version — quartermasters' ledgers proving the sabotage, Ikoma Akuyaku's concealed Scorpion reports inside the Lion archive, a medic praised in the rosters and struck from the genealogies. The reason they are forging is that the true evidence proves the Scorpion presence was treason against the Lion, and nobody wants to say that in this castle. The forgery is not there to invent a fact. It is there to make a true fact sayable, which is a distinction that will not survive being found out.

The clause is good work. Scorpion non-intervention in the CraneLion treaty, traded for support on the mines. She set it before she heard the Scorpion's price and their price was the same clause, which means she read them correctly and gave away nothing by naming it first.

And the treaty she found is the more important document. A newly filed Lion–Crane agreement favouring Lion territorial ambition, mediated by an Otomo, with the Imperial hand on it — filed now, while the Lion are at war with the Unicorn and an Imperial envoy is trying to broker that war closed. Her own clan is being moved somewhere and she found out by accident, in a scribes' hall, on her way to something else. That is worth more of her attention than the mines.

She asked Shiba Midori about maternity teas, both kinds. That is hers, and it is now known to one other person.

Timeline

Judgment Planning in Kitsu Archives - Doji Setsuna, Bayushi Monban, Kakita Kazumi, and Shiba Midori convene in the Kitsu Archives to prepare a judgment on the Snow Plain dispute between the Unicorn Clan and Scorpion Clan Clans. They review Ikoma Akuyaku’s journal and debate whether Scorpion Clan interference justifies awarding the Diamond Mines. The group outlines evidentiary requirements, conditional support tied to non-intervention promises, and local preparation options while accommodating Monban’s duty in the castle.

Council Convening and Claims - The council met in the Kitsu Archives to review Ikoma Akuyaku’s journal (which contained secret Scorpion Clan writings except one entry). Bayushi Monban asserted the Scorpion Clan enabled the Unicorn Clan victory at Snow Plain and claimed the Unicorn Clan owed the Diamond Mines to the Scorpion Clan. Doji Setsuna, Kakita Kazumi, and Shiba Midori acknowledged battlefield spy activity but insisted that only documented proof of a Unicorn ClanScorpion Clan agreement would justify awarding the mines.

Crane Clan Conditional Support and Contact - Doji Setsuna argued that imperial law must serve the empire’s best interests and conditioned any support for the Scorpion Clan claim on an explicit Scorpion Clan promise of non-intervention in an upcoming Crane ClanLion Clan treaty. She confirmed a prior tea-ceremony approach to a Shosuro Contact who was open to negotiations for non-intervention in exchange for support on the mine claim. The group accepted they were two days from the Unicorn Clan and Scorpion Clan arrival and would prepare evidence locally rather than attempt a dangerous excursion to the Snow Plain.

Preparation Options and Roles - Doji Setsuna outlined options: gather Lion Clan historians’ testimony, consult a reputed Scorpion Clan forger, and compile a persuasive case from available records. Bayushi Monban declined travel for evidence, citing her sworn duty as Setsuna’s yojimbo and choosing to remain in the castle. The group agreed to await the Unicorn Clan and Scorpion Clan presentations and to prepare arguments and materials in the interim.

  • Time Constraint Accepted - The group confirmed they were two days from the Unicorn Clan and Scorpion Clan arrival and would prepare evidence locally rather than attempt a dangerous excursion to the Snow Plain.
  • Preparation Options Listed - Doji Setsuna outlined gathering Lion Clan historians’ expert testimony, consulting a reputed Scorpion Clan forger, and compiling a persuasive case from available records.
  • Guarding Duty Affirmed - Bayushi Monban declined Doji Setsuna’s suggestion to travel for evidence due to his sworn duty as her yojimbo, choosing to remain in the castle.

Evidence and Treaty Consultations - Party members pursue specific consultations and archival research to assemble evidence for the impending judgment. Doji Setsuna schedules appointments with physicians and a respected Lion Clan historian and investigates treaty records. The research yields a recent Lion ClanCrane Clan truce and ancillary details (mediator identity and an embassy fire) that bear on political influence and territorial implications.

Servants Briefing and Appointments Set - Kakita Kazumi received bento boxes from his servants and noted Bayushi Monban remained in the archives. Doji Setsuna took her attendant and scribe to schedule consultations with physicians and with Ikoma Ichigo, a respected Lion Clan historian. At the physicians’ quarters Doji described symptoms; the physicians advised remedies and requested private measures to confirm the suspected condition.

Treaty Records and Truce Review - Shiba Midori was invited to private tea by Doji Setsuna while Doji requested recent generations of Lion ClanCrane Clan and Lion ClanUnicorn Clan treaties from Ikoma Ichigo, emphasizing Toshi Ranbo, the Asari Plains, and the Drowned Merchant River. Ikoma produced a newly filed treaty concluding a seven-year Lion ClanCrane Clan truce that ceded two-thirds of the Asari Plains to the Lion Clan in exchange for drops of numerous Lion Clan claims. This treaty record became part of the evidence under review.

Mediator, Embassy Fire, and Politics - Doji learned the mediator for the truce was Otomo Genshin and that Lion Clan negotiator Akodo Akihito conducted talks at the Crane Embassy in Otosan Uchi. Ikoma Ichigo recounted a fire in the Crane Embassy gardens during negotiations that forced evacuation and was not recorded in the treaty documents. Doji connected the mediator’s appointment and the treaty’s terms to the Imperial Advisor’s influence and noted the treaty favored Lion Clan territorial gains near Suma while curbing future Lion Clan claims.

Forgery, Ancestors, and Backroom Deals - The session shifts to clandestine actions: private contacts with Scorpion Clan courtiers and forgers, recruitment of transcription help, ancestral-summoning inquiries, and negotiated forgeries. Kakita and Shiba conduct discrete meetings to craft evidence; Bayushi Monban seeks ancestral support and plans offerings; a Scorpion Clan forger (Soshi Yamako) offers to produce a false confession in exchange for future political favors and a target’s elimination. Monban accepts the terms, Kazumi reports the arrangement to Doji Setsuna, and Setsuna instructs framing the price as formal non-intervention aligned with her earlier condition.

Scorpion Clan Contact and Forger Suggestion - Kakita Kazumi met Soshi Yamako at the Path of Splinters gazebo, using plum wine and bento as pretext to discuss sensitive historical truths about the Snow Plain. Soshi Yamako displayed fine brush tools and indicated knowledge of skilled transcription and imitation, proposing a discrete collaboration. Soshi directed Kazumi to a secluded Ikoma Library location and requested wine, sushi, fine parchment, and inks for a private document-crafting meeting.

  • Political Angle Inferred - Doji Setsuna connected the mediator’s appointment to the Imperial Advisor’s influence and noted the treaty favored Lion Clan territorial gains near Suma (Topaz Championship village) while curbing future Lion Clan claims.
  • Gazebo Meeting Arranged - Kakita Kazumi met Soshi Yamako, a Scorpion Clan courtier, at the Path of Splinters gazebo, sharing plum wine and bento as pretext to discuss sensitive historical “truths” about the Snow Plain.
  • Forger’s Skills Hinted - Soshi Yamako displayed fine brush tools and indicated knowledge of skilled transcription and imitation, proposing a discrete collaboration.

Scribe Recruitment and Transcription - In the Ikoma Hall of Scribes Shiba Midori performed a tragic Phoenix Clan tale to attract a sympathetic scribe. She enlisted Shiba Masaharu to transcribe a ‘personal confession’ based on Ikoma Akuyaku’s hidden writings and privately instructed him on which admissions were critical to include for presentation.

Ancestral Summoning and Offerings - Bayushi Monban requested an audience with Kitsu Takeko (scheduled for the following morning) and inquired whether ancestral summoning could reach non-Lion Clan ancestors. Directed to the Ancestral Shrine priests, Monban offered rice and wine dedicated to Ikoma Akuyaku and received guidance that non-Lion Clan ancestors might answer if regularly honored and if offerings matched tastes. Monban resolved to make a sumptuous offering—spicy fish, spicy duck dumplings, and fine sake—dedicated to Shosuro Amaro and observed Kitsuko Ayoko praying while consulting a senior priest.

Secret Forgery Arrangement with Imako - Kakita Kazumi met Soshi Yamako in a secluded corner of the Ikoma Library, supplying plum wine, sushi, parchment, and inks for a confidential collaboration. Kazumi dictated the Akodo Toronoko account and demonstrated the ability to emulate Ikoma Akuyaku’s masculine hand and Akodo Toronoko’s shaky, blindfolded hand to support a ‘blind woman’s confession.’ Imako requested samples of Kitsu Somalia’s writings and handwriting exemplars and agreed to prepare the confession contingent on Kazumi obtaining those samples.

Negotiations over Price and Acceptance - Shiba Midori hosted Doji Setsuna for private tea and Doji and Midori discussed Otomo Genshin’s role and the Imperial Advisor’s suspected intent; Doji also requested references for maternity-related teas. The resident forger Soshi Yamako intercepted Bayushi Monban to propose solving the mine dispute via a forged Unicorn ClanScorpion Clan agreement and presented terms requiring samples of Shinjo Kamo’s handwriting and chop. Imako demanded a future Emerald Magistrate ruling of Monban’s choosing and the elimination of a future target; Monban weighed risks and accepted the terms. Kakita Kazumi reported Imako’s agreement to Doji Setsuna, and Doji advised framing the Scorpion Clan’s price as formal non-intervention to align with her earlier condition for support.
