A dream led them to a jar in the ground with the unedited field records of the Snow Plain inside it, and a skeleton keeping them company.

Two deliveries opened the day. A long box came to Shiba Midori at breakfast, which she put aside to open alone. And a packet came to Ide Subane from the Head Librarian on the castle's holdings for Shinjo Kamo — letters authenticated as being in his own hand, and short of what the case needs. Then she looked again at the bottom corner and found a watermark that was not quite accidental, and behind it the suggestion of a message in ink that does not show. She said so aloud rather than keeping it, and later went to the Commandant of the Academy to have the holdings explained properly.

Bayushi Monban found something worse. The secret treaty he thought had been lost in the Akodo Libraries had never been entered in any previous inquiry at all. Then Shosuro Aishi caught him alone in a dim corridor with her fan up and talked to him about forgeries, and about how much better all of this would go with coordination, and about the ancestral specters that were shortly going to be summoned to testify.

In the library he gave Doji Setsuna two letters. Her husband is being treated honourably as a prisoner of war. She read them and asked him to stop interfering in Shinjo Harunobu's case, and he agreed to.

Hida Kasudo arrived with his brothers Hida Nozomu and Hida Kenji, all three in lacquered armour with their daishō on, to wait on Lady Kitsu.

Court opened. Kakita Kazumi put in the battle journals. Shosuro Aishi and Bayushi Monban argued over whether an ancestor's testimony can be relied on at all. Then Shiba Midori brought in what Akodo Akihito had found — because he had dreamed where to dig. A sealed jar in the ground, holding the unedited field records of the Snow Plain, and a skeleton.

And in the jar, a letter under a Shosuro mon, addressed to the least of the Bayushi. Kitsuki Kaage opened it and read it out: a condemnation, and an instruction — beg forgiveness, or take the diamond mines yourselves. Bayushi Monban left the chamber.

Kitsuki Kaage set the letter aside as a historical artifact and kept working. He unfolded another secret treaty out of the cache, near-identical to the one Bayushi Monban had submitted — except that this one gives the mines to the Shosuro Family, and it carries no signatures at all. The Head Librarian confirmed it from the bench: there are no signatures and seals as Magistrate Akihito described; none of the formalities attached to it that would support its evidence.

He sent the field records to Lion experts for authentication, and adjourned into procedural motions from Shosuro Aishi and Kakita Kazumi.

In the recess, Doji Setsuna invited Shosuro Aishi to tea in a well-made room and said she believed they could speak frankly. They made the non-interference pact, and each of them staked her honour on it.

Shiba Midori read the cache documents with Kitsuko Ayoko beside her and decided they needed Ikoma Ichigo to authenticate them. She was also already thinking about the skeleton, and what rites it would take to put whoever that was at rest.

Setsuna

The jar is the first clean evidence in this case. Unedited field records of the Snow Plain, sealed in the ground, untouched by three hundred years of clans deciding what their histories should say. Everything else in this room has been through somebody's hands — the Hall of Scribes accounts, the genealogies, three versions of a diary, two versions of a secret treaty. These were buried before anyone started editing.

That is what she should build on and what she should protect. Kitsuki Kaage has sent them to Lion experts to authenticate, which is correct procedure and also hands the Lion the chance to lose them. She should want Ikoma Ichigo on that, publicly, and Shiba Midori has already reached the same conclusion.

Her pact is closed, properly. Non-interference, agreed with Shosuro Aishi directly, with both their honours staked on it. That is the condition she offered Shosuro Imako and never got — now made with the advocate who actually stands in the room, and made in a form that costs the Scorpion something to break.

And the Scorpion's own claim just got worse in two ways at once. The cache treaty gives the mines to the Shosuro Family, not the Bayushi, so the Scorpion do not agree among themselves about who would even hold them. And it is unsigned, which the Head Librarian said from the bench. Meanwhile the letter to the least of the Bayushi tells them to beg forgiveness or take the mines themselves, which is not a deed but an instruction to seize. A clan that was instructed to seize is a clan that did not own.

Two things about her own people. Bayushi Monban walked out of a courtroom when that letter was read, and he has spent this session being managed by Shosuro Aishi in corridors. And she has told him to leave Shinjo Harunobu alone — which was right, and which means the letters saying her husband is being treated honourably are the last news she gets through that channel.

Timeline

Aishi and Monban debated the reliability of ancestor testimony and clan treaty styles before Aishi departed.
