Loyalty Castle

Loyalty Castle, known as Shiro Kodo, stands as a formidable military fortress of the Lion Clan, strategically located less than a day's ride from Otosan Uchi. This stronghold is not merely a residence but a pivotal site in the politically charged landscape marked by the ongoing tensions between the Lion Clan and the Unicorn Clan. Its austere and functional design features robust structures with a labyrinthine layout, crafted to confuse invaders and protect its inhabitants. The uneven steps serve as a clever defense against attackers, while extensive smithies and drill grounds underscore its role as a military training facility.

Recently, the castle has gained prominence due to the death of the former Emerald Champion, Doji Satsume, and now serves as a venue for resolving disputes, such as the Scorpion Clan-Unicorn Clan conflict that Doji Setsuna has been tasked to evaluate. As she approaches Loyalty Castle, accompanied by her retinue, she receives a missive sealed by the Phoenix Clan, revealing that her yojimbo, Bayushi Monbon, has inherited a castle of his own. Upon arrival, she encounters Kitsu Familyki Wataru and other magistrates, who discuss the recent military engagements where the Lion Clan triumphed over the Unicorn Clan, capturing several of their warriors.

In addition to its military significance, Loyalty Castle houses a maintained Shinseist shrine that displays a sealed copy of the Tao, drawing pilgrims and fostering rumors of a hidden chapter of the Tao within its walls. This duality enhances the castle's importance, as it serves both as a center for military operations and a spiritual haven, where the presence of various pilgrims and the soothsayer Kitsu Family Saemi further enrich its atmosphere. Furthermore, the castle hosts the grandest annual Go tournament, showcasing the Lion Clan's military might while reinforcing its status as a key player in the region's power dynamics.

Loyalty Castle, located in the Unicorn Clan lands, serves as a bastion of authority for the Emerald Magistrates, who uphold law and order. It features a blend of traditional architectural elements and the unique cultural influences of the Unicorn Clan, set against a backdrop of variable climate influenced by the nearby mountains and plains, which adds to its natural beauty and strategic advantage. The castle is populated by dignitaries, samurai, and court attendants, including representatives from the Lion Clan and Crane Clan clans, making it a center for political discourse and conflict resolution.

Notable events unfold within its walls, such as Shinjo Mono's arrival after delivering a message to the Ide delegation in Otosan Uchi regarding the defeat of the initial Matsu incursion. He was subsequently questioned by Lion Clan at Loyalty Castle after displaying his Emerald Magistrate badge. Doji Setsuna engaged with Shinjo Mono while observing a duel between Kakita Kazumi and Matsu Koda, which was influenced by past insults exchanged at Loyalty Castle. During the duel, Kakita Kazumi referred to a vulgar insult made by a Lion Clan toward Shiba Midori's ancestors at the castle, leading Matsu Koda to apologize for the misunderstanding. This interplay of events underscores the significance of both castles in the ongoing tensions between the clans, as they serve as vital hubs for military strategy, political maneuvering, and cultural exchanges.
