The hill came down and ended the argument. All three Unicorn commanders were dead in the snow, the Lion held the ground, and nobody won anything that a clerk could write into a deed.

Akodo Kagekatsu's flank went in and took the Central Hill. His unit put Utaku Mangiano on the ground the moment he left himself open, and the panic of it ran back through the Unicorn line. The Lion Clan fortified what they had taken and settled into attrition — hold the hill, bleed them, wait.

Akodo Toronoko made that work. Her archers laid a curtain that pinned the Unicorn where they stood, and when their spearmen came on she split her volleys by angle — the back rank shooting high over the front — and stopped the advance in the open snow, where neither army had anywhere to be.

Atop the hill Kitsu Somalia gathered her cohorts, pointed them at the Unicorn commander, and called Fire From Within. The cohort went up. Their commander spent his turn rallying men who were on fire.

Matsu Morozane put out a Rallying Cry with Shigo no Chinmoku at his back. A Unicorn officer came at him and he played stupid until the officer was close enough, and then let the lion go — and the horse bolted and took its rider out of the fight and a good deal of order with it.

Then Kitsu Yui settled the day's second leader. She is Kitsu Somalia's bodyguard, and when a duel was thrown at her commander she took it herself and beat Utaku Mangiano with it. Two of the three Unicorn leaders were down. Kitsu Somalia looked at that and decided to keep grinding rather than gamble.

The Unicorn had one more thing. Their shugenja put a working over the field that drove the Lion into mass panic, and then called Matsu Morozane out — come out and fight, coward — and burned him down. He went into the snow with the fire still on him, in front of his own troops, which is the worst place for a commander to fall and the reason a shugenja picks him. Kitsu Somalia came off the hill at a run, put Extinguish through him, killed the flames and held him together. He lived. He was not going to be standing up again that day.

Then the hill came down. An avalanche off the Central Hill split the battlefield in half and buried the flank the Unicorn were standing on, and that was the end of the engagement — not a decision, a burial.

When it was quiet, all three Unicorn leaders were dead, their army was broken, the Lion had taken losses and still held the Central Hill, and Matsu Morozane was alive by a margin. A tactical victory, hard bought.

The Lion held the field. All three Unicorn commanders dead, the Unicorn army broken, the Central Hill in Lion hands at the end of it.

Ikoma Ichigo told her, in the Hall of Scribes, that the Snow Plain was a Unicorn victory and a Lion defeat.

Those cannot both be the whole truth, and the memory is not finished — there are days of this left, and an army that holds a hill on one evening can lose everything by the next. The historian's summary is no longer the settled fact of the battle. Somewhere between this hill and the ending the Lion lost what they were standing on, and how they lost it is the thing the record has been quiet about twice now.

The ending itself is worth as much. The engagement did not conclude, it was buried. An avalanche came off the Central Hill and cut the field in two. That matters for a property dispute in a way it did not matter to anyone fighting there — snow moves ground, and ground that moved three hundred years ago is not where the old survey says it is. Whatever boundary the mines were described by before that winter, the hill it was drawn on came down.
