Clash on the Snow Plain

Session 12·2025-06-10

A Scorpion came down to the parley offering to make peace between them, and both generals refused her. She was not the enemy and she was not an ally, and nobody could read her at all.

The Unicorn Clan gave up the marsh. They pulled out of it deliberately and repositioned, which is not a retreat — a clan that spent a night preparing this ground does not abandon a piece of it by accident. In the Lion camp Matsumura Zane took first aid and put Warrior's Resolve on his own fatigue to get himself back to the honour guard, and Kitsu Somalia called Inari's Blessing to put something fortifying over the line.

Then the two armies met on the hilltop to talk. General Shinjo Kamo stayed mounted through it. Matsu Sakura demanded the Unicorn quit the plain. And a Scorpion came forward — Shosuro Amane — and announced herself as a peace role, offering to broker between them.

Both generals refused her terms.

Kitsu Somalia tried to take her measure while she stood there, and could not. She read for honour and for trustworthiness and got nothing back; Shosuro Amane stayed inscrutable, and then the parley was over. Nobody at the Snow Plain found out what the Scorpion wanted, or on whose behalf she had come down to a battlefield that was not hers.

While that was happening, Ikoma Akuyaku was crossing the plain in the dark. He took a calming breath in water stance and moved up under concealment, and no Unicorn guard saw him do it. He had a route: the flat under cover of night, then the rocks, then a belt of forest that would keep him off the Unicorn scouts' sightlines. The Old Diamond Mines are up on that forested hill. The battle was being fought downhill of the property.

The rocks beat him. He went at the climb, the rope failed, and he spent everything he had left on not being seen while he fell. He broke his foot on landing, well enough that it might as well have been taken off, and he went out cold in the snow — where the temperature that was going to kill him was also the only reason he did not bleed to death. Before he lost consciousness he put one shot into the Western Watchtower, knowing exactly what that would wake.

Back in camp Akodo Kayamayako told Kitsu Somalia to tighten up: with the guard rotations stretched this thin, Unicorn spies would be coming for the Lion command. In the night there was an alarm. By morning heavy snow had half-buried the tents and remade the ground, which meant every trap either army had laid was under a fresh white lid and none of them were where the maps said.

Then a messenger came in to say Ikoma Akuyaku was alive. Matsu Sakura had written him off. He arrived on a stretcher blue with cold, an arrow in his backside and his foot splinted, and he had the thing they had spent the whole engagement buying: a sketch map of the Unicorn Clan War Camp, and the shape of their scouting pattern, which was tight. Kitsu Somalia put Path to Inner Peace through him to get his fatigue and his strife down far enough to keep answering questions.

What he had to add was about the mountain. Snow had piled on the slope he crossed and slid; anyone coming down that way would be seen doing it; and the same snow was now sitting on top of the traps.

Setsuna

The Scorpion at the Snow Plain has a name, and it is Shosuro Amane. She was not in the line and not in the camp. She walked into a parley between two armies and offered to make peace, and both generals told her no.

Set that beside the ground. The mines are up on the forested hill and the battle was fought below them, and neither army appears to have known they were there. Not the Lion council, which spent two days arguing over that terrain and never once mentioned what was on top of it; not the Unicorn, who prepared the ground overnight and prepared the wrong part of it. The Scorpion knew what the hill was worth. The Scorpion were also the only party there working to keep it quiet.

That changes what Shosuro Amane was doing. A neutral offering to broker peace between two clans is one thing. A Scorpion offering to stop a battle being fought at the foot of a property she knows the value of, and they do not, is a different thing entirely — and it is the reading that explains why she came down at all, why she would not be read, and why she was content to be refused and go.

It also settles the archive. Ikoma Ichigo's account is not edited and there is no cover-up in the Hall of Scribes: the Lion did not write down the mines because the Lion did not know about the mines. The silence is ignorance, and ignorance is harder to attack than a lie and much harder to attack than a forgery.

So the present claim inverts. The Scorpion case rests on having known the value of that hill three hundred years ago, and they cannot lead with it, because saying so says in the same breath that they concealed it from both armies at the time. That is the pressure point. Whatever Shosuro Aishi argues in front of her, he is arguing around a thing he cannot afford to state.

Timeline

Frontline Clash and Duel Escalation - Initial frontal pressure from the Unicorn Clan and supporting Shugenja created heavy casualties and panic among Kitsu Somalia’s right-flank cohort. Matsu Sakura ordered a relief strike and Torunako led an elite flanking assault that inflicted substantial attrition and panic while elite training increased Unicorn Clan losses. Kitsu Somalia countered with a Wall of Fire that dazed, burned, and halted the Unicorn Clan advance, causing additional attrition and panic. On the flank Matsumura Zane entered a formal duel, lost initiative, suffered fatigue and bleeding, avoided capture after his Hunting Cat critically struck the opponent, and the Unicorn Clan scored the “test their mettle” objective as control shifted to the next operational phase.

Unicorn Clan Pressure, Lion Clan Flanking Response - The Unicorn Clan, supported by a Shugenja, pressed the Lion Clan center and drove Kitsu Somalia’s troops toward the water, producing rising casualties and panic. Matsu Sakura signaled Torunako to execute a relief strike; Torunako led a flanking assault using Righteous Example in fire stance that inflicted eight attrition and eight panic and lowered allied attack TNs. Torunako’s unit applied elite training to increase the Unicorn Clan cohort’s losses by two attrition and two panic; the Unicorn Clan pincer then retargeted to face Torunako, losing their flank and delivering only light attrition while reorganizing.

  • Battle state recap - The Unicorn Clan army, led by General Shinjo Kamo, had earlier pincered Kitsu Somalia’s right-flank cohort and revealed Shugenja support by launching exploding flame brands; the Unicorn Shugenja Commander was directing that assault.
  • Unicorn Clan press center - The Unicorn Clan unit facing Kitsu Somalia pressed hard from the front to drive her Lion Clan toward the water; Kitsu Somalia’s soldiers held formation but suffered rising casualties and panic.
  • General’s signal issued - Matsu Sakura, Lion Clan general, snapped her war fan toward Torunako’s yari samurai detachment, ordering a relief strike against the Unicorn Clan pincer’s exposed flank.
  • Torunako’s charge executed - Torunako, Lion Clan bushi leading elite yari samurai, led a flanking assault using Righteous Example in fire stance against the Unicorn Clan pincer’s leader cohort, inflicting eight attrition and eight panic and lowering allied attack TNs.
  • Elite training applied - Torunako’s unit’s elite training further increased the Unicorn Clan cohort’s losses by two attrition and two panic.

Kitsu's Wall of Fire Halt - Kitsu Somalia invoked Wall of Fire along the Unicorn Clan line, dazing those caught and imposing burning; the barricade lasted three rounds and halted the Unicorn Clan advance. The Wall of Fire caused an additional six attrition and six panic to the Unicorn Clan; overall the Unicorn Clan suffered 11 more casualties and 9 more panic from the eruption.

  • Unicorn Clan retargeted flank - The Unicorn Clan pincer’s commander redirected to face Torunako, losing their flank and delivering only light attrition while reorganizing to meet her charge.
  • Wall of Fire cast - Kitsu Somalia, Lion Clan Shugenja, invoked Wall of Fire along the Unicorn Clan line, dazing those caught and imposing burning; the barricade lasted three rounds and halted the Unicorn Clan advance.

Flank Duel and Rescue Chaos - Matsumura Zane engaged a Unicorn Duelist under duel etiquette, lost initiative to a flowing-water technique, and was struck with a water-style cut that inflicted fatigue and a bleeding condition. With his endurance exceeded the Unicorn Clan demanded he yield; Zane’s Hunting Cat leapt onto the duelist’s back and scored a critical strike causing a permanent injury. Nearby units broke etiquette to extract the wounded commanders, allowing Zane to avoid capture while a Lion Clan soldier staunched his bleeding; the Unicorn Clan achieved their “test their mettle” objective and battle control shifted to the next operational phase.

  • Fire attrition inflicted - Kitsu Somalia’s Wall of Fire caused an additional six attrition and equal panic to the Unicorn Clan; overall the Unicorn Clan suffered 11 more casualties and 9 more panic from the eruption.
  • Duel resumed on flank - Matsumura Zane engaged a Unicorn Duelist under duel etiquette while nearby units held position until the clash resolved.
  • Duel initiative lost - Matsumura Zane yielded initiative as the Unicorn Clan opponent acted with flowing-water technique, reducing Zane’s resistance.
  • Flowing Water Strike landed - The Unicorn Duelist struck Matsumura Zane with a water-style cut, inflicting significant fatigue and a bleeding condition as Zane failed to withstand the force of the blow.
  • Yield demanded - With blade at Matsumura Zane’s throat and his endurance exceeded, the Unicorn Duelist ordered him to yield.
  • Cat intervention triggered - Matsumura Zane whistled; his Hunting Cat leapt onto the Unicorn Duelist’s back from behind, scoring a critical strike that caused a permanent injury.
  • Rescue chaos erupted - Both sides’ nearby units broke etiquette to extract their wounded commanders, allowing Matsumura Zane to avoid capture while a Lion Clan soldier staunched his bleeding with field aid.

Night Infiltration and Repositioning - A Scorpion Clan infiltrator used the general engagement as cover to approach the Unicorn Clan War Camp while the Unicorn Clan deliberately withdrew from the marsh and repositioned to a fortified hilltop. Lion Clan scouts exposed concealed spike-filled pits and Ikoma Hideri assessed the Unicorn Clan’s tactics as a feigned retreat coordinated with close-in defensive fighting. The Lion Clan tended wounded, provided first aid and blessing meals, and a parley at the hilltop escalated tensions and ended without agreement; both armies broke contact and camped for the night. Bayushi Monban planned and attempted a night infiltration route, failed a rock climb, sustained a broken foot and partial unconsciousness, and fired a shot at the Western Watchtower that would alert sentries.

Scorpion Clan Stealth Approach Begins - Bayushi Monban (Bayushi Monban), a blue-skinned Scorpion Clan infiltrator allied with the Lion Clan, used the general engagement as cover to begin a stealth approach toward the Unicorn Clan War Camp. He steadied himself in water stance and advanced one position under concealment.

  • Objective tallied - The Unicorn Clan achieved their “test their mettle” objective off the clash result, and battle control shifted to the next operational phase.
  • Scorpion Clan infiltration begun - Bayushi Monban (referred to in play as Bayushi Monban), a blue-skinned Scorpion Clan infiltrator allied with the Lion Clan, used the general engagement as cover to begin a stealth approach toward the Unicorn Clan War Camp.

Unicorn Clan Withdrawal and Traps Revealed - At round’s end the Unicorn Clan deliberately drew back from the marsh and repositioned to a fortified hilltop overlooking the boggy paddies with the general’s standard moved to the front. Ikoma Hideri cited records of similar tactics and ordered scouts to expose concealed spike-filled pits camouflaged across the Snow Plain, judging the Unicorn Clan’s actions akin to a feigned retreat coordinated with close-in defensive fighting.

  • Calming breath taken - Bayushi Monban steadied himself in water stance and advanced one position closer under concealment toward the Unicorn Clan lines.
  • Unicorn Clan order withdrawal - At round’s end, the Unicorn Clan drew back deliberately from the marsh, not in panic, as Matsu Sakura conferred on a hill with Ikoma Hideri, a muddy-robed Lion Clan historian.
  • Trap tactic identified - Ikoma Hideri cited records of similar tactics; Lion Clan scouts, on Matsu Sakura’s orders, exposed concealed spike-filled pits camouflaged with foliage across the Snow Plain.
  • Feigned retreat assessed - Ikoma Hideri judged the Unicorn Clan’s trap use akin to close-in defensive fighting, possibly learned against the Crab at the The Wall, coordinated with a feigned retreat.

Field Aid and Infiltrator Progress - Matsumura Zane received first aid and used Warrior’s Resolve to reduce fatigue while preparing to rejoin the honor guard. Kitsu Somalia cast Inara’s Blessing to conjure a fortifying meal improving recovery; Bayushi Monban continued stealth movement through light cover toward the Unicorn Clan War Camp undetected and set up for night infiltration.

  • Unicorn Clan repositioned - The Unicorn Clan withdrew to a fortified hilltop on the edge of the plain overlooking the boggy paddies, forming to fight again with the general’s standard moving to the front.
  • First aid administered - Matsumura Zane received treatment; he also used Warrior’s Resolve to reduce fatigue while preparing to rejoin the honor guard.
  • Blessing meal summoned - Kitsu Somalia invoked Inara’s Blessing to conjure a fortifying meal, feeding her cohort and improving their recovery from attrition during downtime.

Parley, Tension, and Nightfall Camps - At the hilltop General Shinjo Kamo remained mounted while Matsu Sakura demanded the Unicorn Clan withdraw and a Scorpion Clan emissary’s peace role was refused; Torunako appraised Shinjo Kamo and Kitsu Somalia failed to read Shosuro Amane. Matsumura Zane offered to champion Matsu Sakura, breaching etiquette and costing honor, then invoked Call of the Wild to enrage Kamo’s warhorse and traded barbs; Bayushi Monban made additional stealth movement and both armies broke contact for the night, with the Unicorn Clan camping on the hilltop and the Lion Clan withdrawing to tend wounded and reorganize.

Infiltration Route and Accident - Bayushi Monban identified a night route across the plain, a fitness rock climb, then a forested traverse to avoid Unicorn Clan scouts. In Lion Camp Torunako invoked Preserve Strength with Matsumura Zane’s medicine and Kitsu Somalia cast Inara’s Blessing again; Bayushi Monban attempted the rock climb, failed, fell and broke his foot before firing a successful shot at the Western Watchtower that would alert sentries.

  • Armies camped - Both armies broke contact for the night; the Unicorn Clan pitched camp on the hilltop while the Lion Clan withdrew to their camp to tend wounded and reorganize.
  • Infiltration route planned - Bayushi Monban identified a night route—cross the plain under darkness (easy), climb the rocks (fitness), then traverse a forested belt (skulduggery)—while avoiding Unicorn Clan scouts’ sightlines.
  • Casualty mitigation begun - In Lion Camp downtime, Torunako invoked Preserve Strength with assistance from Matsumura Zane’s medicine to reduce attrition casualties across the army.
  • Second blessing meal - Kitsu Somalia cast Inara’s Blessing again to improve troops’ fatigue recovery; Torunako leveraged Drill Precision to shed strife during maneuvers.
  • Mountain climb failed - Bayushi Monban attempted a water-approach fitness climb on the rocks, failed, and used his opportunities to stay unseen as his rope failed.
  • Fall injuries sustained - Bayushi Monban fell, passed fitness checks minimally, and broke his foot (functionally a “lost foot” injury) before losing consciousness; the cold minimized bleeding.

Morning Council and Flank Plan - Overnight tensions produced an alarm and a morning transformed battlefield as heavy snow half-buried tents and reshaped ground, likely re-covering traps. At the morning briefing Matsu Sakura accepted Matsumura Zane’s apology, ordered garrisons and proposed a snow-shrouded surprise attack while officers noted terrain hazards and supply considerations. Matsumura Zane proposed leading a flanking force through Crystal Pass; after a staked tactics argument he secured approval and Kitsu Somalia confirmed she would join him while Matsu Sakura prepared the main army to pin the Unicorn Clan center. Bayushi Monban returned wounded, provided a sketch map and debrief about the Unicorn Clan War Camp and snow hazards; Kitsu Somalia stabilized him and Matsu Sakura finalized the day’s plan for the flank and main advance.

Camp Tensions and Morning Alarm - Torunako received a rival jab about her strategy and practiced brushwork while Ikoma Hideri recorded first-day battle impressions. During the night Kitsu Somalia awoke to urgent voices and met Okoto Kayamayako, who reported confronting a suspicious figure near Matsu Sakura’s tent and warned of possible Unicorn Clan spies. By morning heavy snow had half-buried tents and reshaped the battlefield, likely re-covering traps and worsening marshy ground.

  • Watchtower shot taken - Before blacking out entirely, Bayushi Monban loosed a successful water-approach shot at the Western Watchtower, knowing it would alert sentries.
  • Rival jab delivered - Back at camp, a code of kakakatsu needled Torunako about her “grand Lion Clan jaw” stratagem getting “stuck in the mud,” citing scout reports of further Unicorn Clan traps.
  • Scholar scribing - Torunako, near her strife limit, practiced brushwork and visited Ikoma Archive; Ikoma Hideri recorded first-day battle impressions and rationed paper and ink.
  • Night alarm raised - Kitsu Somalia awoke to urgent voices, exited her tent, glimpsed a fleeing shadow, and met Okoto Kayamayako from the medical tent, who reported confronting a suspicious figure near Matsu Sakura’s tent.
  • Spy warning issued - Okoto Kayamayako advised Kitsu Somalia to heighten caution, suspecting Unicorn Clan spies seeking to assassinate Lion Clan leaders amid stretched guard rotations.

Morning Council and Flank Authorization - At the morning briefing Matsu Sakura accepted Matsumura Zane’s formal apology and cautioned him, then ordered garrisons and proposed a winter surprise attack while officers noted snow-reburied traps and treacherous paddy slush. Matsumura Zane proposed leading a flanking force through Crystal Pass to descend on the Unicorn Clan position; after staking a tactics argument and with Kitsu Somalia’s assistance he preserved his honor stake and received approval to lead the flanking detachment. Kitsu Somalia confirmed she would join the flanking expedition as Matsu Sakura prepared the main army to pin the Unicorn Clan center for a hammer-and-anvil attack.

  • Snowfall transformed field - By morning, unseasonably heavy snow had half-buried tents and reshaped the battlefield, likely re-covering traps and worsening marshy ground.
  • Apology accepted - At morning briefing, Matsu Sakura received Matsumura Zane’s formal apology for the parley outburst, deemed it unacceptable but understandable, and cautioned him not to repeat it.
  • Winter plan set - Matsu Sakura ordered garrisons established before full winter and proposed a snow-shrouded surprise attack; Matsu Hisoka dissented on risk while others urged timely action.
  • Terrain reviewed - Officers noted snow reburied Unicorn Clan traps, deepened paddy slush, and made direct approaches treacherous; seizing Snow Plain village for supplies would split Lion Clan forces as Unicorn Clan held the fortified hilltop.
  • Flank proposal offered - Matsumura Zane proposed leading a flanking force through Crystal Pass over the mountains to the lakeside to descend on the Unicorn Clan position; Kitsu Somalia considered joining.
  • Plan authorized - Matsu Sakura required a staked tactics argument; with Kitsu Somalia’s assistance, Matsumura Zane succeeded, kept his honor/glory stake, and received approval to lead the flanking detachment.

Spy Debrief and Final Plan - A messenger reported Bayushi Monban’s return; he arrived on a stretcher, blue-skinned and frozen with an arrow in his rear and a splinted broken foot, and supplied a sketch map of the Unicorn Clan encampment noting tight scouting, a vigilant watchtower, fewer cavalry than expected, a single snow messenger, and high Unicorn Clan morale. Kitsu Somalia used Path to Inner Peace to reduce Monban’s fatigue and strife and he warned that snow on the mountainside had slid downslope and now concealed traps. Matsu Sakura finalized the day’s plan: Matsumura Zane and Kitsu Somalia would begin the mountain flank while the main Lion Clan force advanced up the middle to seize the central hill.

  • Flank team formed - Kitsu Somalia confirmed she would join Matsumura Zane’s flanking expedition as Matsu Sakura prepared the main army to pin the Unicorn Clan center for a hammer-and-anvil attack.
  • Spy returned wounded - A messenger reported Bayushi Monban’s return; Matsu Sakura, who had feared him dead, ordered him brought in for treatment and debriefing by Kitsu Somalia.
  • Spy debrief delivered - Bayushi Monban arrived on a stretcher, blue-skinned and frozen, with an arrow in his rear and a splinted broken foot; he supplied a sketch map of the Unicorn Clan encampment, reported tight scouting, a vigilant watchtower, fewer cavalry than expected, a single snow messenger, and high Unicorn Clan morale.
  • Healing provided - Kitsu Somalia used Path to Inner Peace to reduce Bayushi Monban’s fatigue and strife, stabilizing him for further questioning.
  • Snow hazards noted - Bayushi Monban warned that snow had accumulated on the mountainside he traversed and slid downslope, that Unicorn Clan descending there would be visible, and that snow now concealed traps, making them doubly treacherous for both armies.
  • Battle plan confirmed - Matsu Sakura finalized the day’s plan—Matsumura Zane and Kitsu Somalia would begin the mountain flank while the main Lion Clan force advanced up the middle to seize the central hill—before adjourning the council.
